Bradley Method® Classes with Sarah Finnegan

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  Your interest in a natural birth is a first step in creating a happy, healthy birth experience.  There are so many options available for you during your pregnancy, labor, delivery and post-partum period!  How will you know what the choices are, and which ones are right for your family?  The answer is that you will know through education, by creating your own birth beliefs, and by following your own intuition.

So, why The Bradley Method®, specifically?  The main focuses of this approach to childbirth include:

  • pregnancy nutrition and exercise
  • the normal progression of pregnancy and birth
  • the role of a birth coach
  • effective pain  management through relaxation and knowledge
  • the processes, pros and cons of routine interventions
  • the processes, pros and cons of medically necessary interventions
  • the benefits and how-to's of breastfeeding
  • newborn care
  • how to be an informed and integral part of the whole process

Bradley classes are comprehensive.  I offer about 36 hours of instruction over a 12 week period, and provide a lot of additional resources as you learn.  We discuss ALL of your options, focusing on what is best for your individual needs.

I'm excited about your interest in Bradley classes, and I encourage you to look around my website to find out more about my classes.  One of the best ways to judge if a class is right for you is to speak personally with the teacher, so I encourage you to give me a call so we can chat.  If you decide you'd like to join my next series, I will send you a registration form right away!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I'm not sure I want a natural birth?

A: That's okay!  My classes will teach you about ALL your options regarding your birth, and which ones you choose are up to you.  You'll create your own birth philosophies, as well as learn skills that will help you decide if/when your birth plan needs to change.

Q: What if I have an OB and want to have my baby in the hospital?  Are Bradley classes for me?

A:  Absolutely!  The choice of your medical team and birth place is a personal one.  And the place you choose is the right one as long as you feel that you are being heard and respected, and you have found a group of people interested in including you in the decision making process.

Q: Are you one of those "militant" natural birth people?

A: Uh, no.  I believe in natural birth.  I believe that a lot of what is routinely done during birth is not necessary.  Until it is.  And when you need interventions, I sure am glad that they are there.  In my class, you'll learn how to weigh the pros and cons for interventions, and choose only the ones that your personal birth requires--and that may mean that you have an intervention and drug free birth!

Q: Why are your classes so long?

A: Each series is 12 weeks long.  Bradley classes cover not only labor and birth, but pregnancy nutrition and exercise, how to choose the right birth team, how to coach in labor, breastfeeding and newborn care.  These classes don't gloss over anything, but teach you about all the options, so that you are free to come to your own decisions.  Each class is about three hours long.  We have snacks, play games, watch videos, have labor rehearsals and do a relaxation technique each week, not to mention go over each week's specific content.  It's really hard to do all that in less than 3 hours.  They run a little shorter occasionally; it just depends on the number of questions and conversations we have throughout the evening.

Q: Does my coach have to be a husband?

A: No.  Your coach can be a husband, boyfriend, mother, sister, cousin, co-worker or friend.  You want to choose a
person who will support you physically and emotionally throughout your pregnancy and labor.

Q: Are Bradley Classes for patchouli-wearing hippies?

A: You bet.  They're for hippies, nerds, cool kids, athletes, cheerleaders, band geeks, goths and even just plain old Average Joe.  Anyone can take and love Bradley classes!
