Doula Services

A doula is specially trained to assist a laboring woman throughout the birth process.   Having a doula assist in birth is proven to shorten labor, reduce the number of interventions and create a more positive perception of birth.   Doulas do not practice medicine, but instead they offer support to both laboring mothers and their families in many ways.  Unlike most nurses, midwives or doctors, doulas serve only one couple at a time, so you get their undivided attention.

While the Bradley Method® does teach husbands to be amazing and capable support systems, a doula has the added advantages that she has given birth herself, and has experience working with medical teams in different settings.

A bit more about my doula services:

Training
I am fully certified by the National Academy of Husband Coached Childbirth (The Bradley Method®).  Bradley training is doula training.

Experience
I began assisting births in 2003.  I am still surpirsed at the uniqueness I find in each experience.  I have assisted with:

  • intervention free, natural births
  • birth center births
  • hospital births
  • medicated births
  • Cesarean births
  • high risk pregnancies and deliveries
  • induced and augmented births
  • complications
  • long labors
  • posterior presentations
  • multiples (twins)
  • medically complicated births

Techniques
While every labor is different, in general, I offer support in the following ways:

  • massage, heat, water or ice
  • guided visualization
  • optimal positioning, rebozo
  • asking questions of your medical team
  • advocating for your choices / birth plan
  • deepening relaxation
  • emotional support
  • guidance for your birth partner/ coach / other family members
  • errand running
  • making phone calls / posting progress updates
  • whatever else you need!

Services

  • We meet before the birth to go over your birth plan and get to know each other
  • Arrive at your birth place when you're about 5 cm, or whenever you feel you need the support
  • Stay until about an hour after the birth to help with postpartum and breastfeeding
  • A written account of your birth story
  • 24/7 phone and email support before and after birth
